Bases
So you’ve chosen your Reg Barber handle. Your next step it to choose your tamper base to fit your espresso machine. Well you need to make two decisions:
Decision 1
The Tamper Base Shape: Flat, US Curve, Euro Curve or C-Flat Curve.
There’s much debate as to whether a flat base or curved base is better. We prefer the science behind the flat bases but here’s both arguments:
Flat bases — Flat creates an even dispersion of water throughout the coffee grinds. We would recommend that unless your basket walls (not your portafilter walls) are tapered substantially inwards then a flat base will give you best results.
Curved bases — Some say that curved bases aid with the distribution of coffee grinds around the edge of the basket to avoid channelling, but that would only make sense if your basket walls (not your portafilter walls) are tapered substantially inwards.
Decision 2
The Tamper Base Size: Based on espresso machine manufacture recommendations, we have provided some suggestions for matching your espresso machine with the appropriate tamper base. Please be aware that this is only a recommendation and the only true way to be 100% accurate is to measure your portafilter basket or send it in to us and we can measure it exactly.
One way to be sure your tamper base is the perfect size is to buy one of our 58.4mm or 58.5mm tamper bases and a matching Synesso basket. We have worked with Reg Barber himself to create the perfect tamper base for the double and triple Synesso baskets. Click on the links below to buy the Synesso baskets direct from our Associated Products section.
58.5mm bases are the perfect size for an 18g or 21g Synesso Triple basket
58.4mm bases are the perfect size for a 14g Synesso Double basket
