Ugandan — Bugisu Sipi Falls

Arabica coffee has been cultivated in Uganda for close to a century and is primarily grown in three higher altitude areas of Uganda. Bugisu Washed Arabica is the most famous of the Ugandan Arabicas. Grown in and around Mbale, they compare very favorably with other East African high grown coffees. The crop is grown on the slopes of the Elgon mountain range in three distinct areas — the Mbale, Sironko and Kapchorwa districts and so is found at altitudes ranging from 1,300 meters in the south to 2,000 meters in the Central and Northern districts. The Bugisu is normally ‘intercropped’ or grown alongside other crops, and the harvest season starts in September finishing in February.

The Bugisu is processed prior to export, and the clean coffee is separated into three main grades classified by bean size. The Bugisu AA, screen 17 and above, is the premium grade, grown on the slopes of the majestic extinct volcano Mount Elgon.

Cupping Notes

This Ugandan is going gangbusters at the moment! With a mild deep nut and slight caramel taste, the Bugisu Sipi Falls drives into a deep body full of texture. While the sweetness is fairly mild, it brings an almost Golden-Syrup-like tang with it. As espresso, the brightness of the coffee combined with the heavy body creates a full juiciness with a long aftertaste. With milk, it turns incredibly smooth, developing a velvety texture and lingering, warm aftertaste.
