Papua New Guinea — Purosa
In March 2005 the 2,600 growers of this collective were accepted into the global Fair Trade organization and their co-operative is managed by Coffee Connections. With PNG rural areas suffering from a lack of infrastructure, maintenance and investment in development due to a shortage of government funds, life in the village had become difficult. Villagers had a huge problem getting their cash crops to market.
But the growers were innovative. Seeing their people struggling, the village elders arranged an initial collection of funds in the form of a small head tax to generate cash to carry out essential road maintenance. The idea of forming a co-operative society grew out of this community-based response to the problem. The co-operative society grew into a registered co-operative group supported by Coffee Connections Limited.
The Eastern Highlands Province was first developed as an important coffee region in the early 1980’s, when seedlings from the Arabica coffee species Typica, bourbon and arusha were planted extensively in villages and in the two main plantations making up the Purosa group. The Purosa area has been certified organic for coffee since 1991. The rich volcanic soil, plentiful rainfall and sunlight provide excellent growing conditions for this coffee.

Cupping Notes
Wow! This coffee is rich, deep and full on in every way. Smelling a cup of this baby is like strolling through a herb garden, while chomping on fresh liquorice. Inhaling a mouthful leaves your taste buds filled with blackcurrants and mulberries, with licorice undertones and the aroma of fresh herbs. It’s a buttery mouthful, with a syrupy mouthfeel and the slight lingering sweetness contains a hint of dried apricots. For acidity, think spicy blackcurrants, star anise and overtones of apple skin. And the aftertaste? A wonderful underlying almond, like marzipan on a cake, with a great mouthfeel. This one is long lasting and warming. A great winter cup!
