Coffee in a can

Dean show's his reaction to Japan's newest craze — coffee in a can

We all know the feeling. You’re desperate for a cold drink and you have to get one now. But you’re not near a shop. What do you do? Find a cold drinks machine, slot in your money, listen to the satisfying ‘ker plunk’ as it hits the base of the machine and thankfully gulp the cooling liquid.

But what happens when you’re desperate for a coffee and there’s no café or vendor in sight? Well in Japan you do as above. Yup! That’s right. Coffee in a can. The latest concept in caffeinated drinks. With typical Japanese efficiency, the can is heated to the right temperature and funneled out of the machine into your waiting hands. Simply pop the tab, breathe in the aroma of pure coffee and inhale the dark liquid with relief. Or do you? The fascinatingly named ‘Black Boss’ is a truly Japanese concept in coffee marketing. Hot, sweet and strong, it packs a punch, but at what cost? If you’re ever over that way, try it and let me know what you think.

Japan is famous for buying the best green coffee beans grown on God’s earth. As specialty coffee roasters and true lovers of the best of the dark stuff, we are in constant competition with our Japanese friends for the best beans money can buy. But perhaps we treat the end brew with a touch more respect. Don’t think we’ll be seeing coffee in cans on these Aussie shores. In Australia coffee is to be savoured and enjoyed; to add depth and flavour to the busyness of everyday life. That’s why we do what we do here at 5 Senses. Fancy a brew?
