Divine comes to Freo
Fremantle is famous for its multitudinous cafés, but if you’re seeking outstanding coffee and a genuinely tempting menu, you can’t go past Hubbles Yard Café, which stands proudly on the corner of George and Hubble Streets in East Fremantle.

Owners Eleanor and Fabio Hupfer took over Hubbles in October 2007 and haven’t had time to sit down since. Eleanor couldn’t resist the lure of the café – she says she and Fabio saw its potential immediately, and admits she “fell in love with the café and its ambience”. She and Fabio have been pouring that love into Hubbles Yard ever since.
With Fabio’s Swiss hospitality education, and Eleanor a self-confessed ‘foodie’, it comes as no surprise that their first priority was raising the standard of food to match the sensational coffee that Hubbles Yard has always served.
To this end, Eleanor and Fabio have developed an extensive menu, with tempting treats for all appetites, including low-fat offerings, a good selection of choices for the vegetarian and options to suit the ever increasing number of gluten-intolerant individuals. All day breakfast is available 7 days a week, with avocado and tomato salsa on toast topped with two poached eggs being one of the most popular dishes – and it’s even good for the waistline!
Eleanor bakes a huge range of cakes and biscuits, including favourites like chocolate banana, flourless orange and almond cake and apple and rhubarb buttercake. Their salad range has been put together with effort and imagination, and includes beetroot with goats cheese and walnuts, tabouli, and roasted vegetable and chickpea. Add to this a selection of offerings such as savoury crepes, vegetable lasagne, tuna fetta and basil cakes and you won’t be able to resist a little bit of something something to go with your coffee.
With a three group La Marzocco and Mahlkonig grinder, the team at Hubbles Yard certainly know their coffee. You only have to watch the steady stream of customers coming through their door to know that Eleanor, Fabio and their great team (Sandro, Benjamin, Cath, Trish and Mali) are passionate about the brew they serve.
Eleanor, ever modest, is quick to point out that success is a relative concept, but when pressed, attributes Hubbles’ popularity amongst the Fremantle community to their belief in consistently providing the best quality product and exceptional, smiling service.
Hubbles was shortlisted in the 2007 Gold Plate awards, and have been nominated again this year in the ‘Coffee Shop’ division. It’s worth a visit to try their coffee (and a selection from their extensive menu) so that you can put in your 5 cents worth and support them as they vie to take out the top honour this year.
