Magazine Espresso opens in Burswood

Fiona Elliott and Sarah Green are the faces behind Magazine Espresso, which recently opened in Burswood

In a suburb almost devoid of places to find a fine coffee, a Five Senses-fuelled espresso bar opened last month to cater for the many caffeine-starved business people in the area.

A long-time concept of writer-designer Simon Elliott, Magazine Espresso merges magazines and design with quality takeaway coffee. The outlet stands just inside the entrance to a warehouse-style building that has recently been converted into a creative hub of 12 businesses and has the polished concrete floors and industrial vibe reminiscent of small European espresso bars.

Simon’s wife Fiona and friend Sarah Green are managing the venture, training staff in the art of conversation, running great shots and creating perfectly-textured milk.

The response so far? “Thank goodness you’ve arrived!” And besides the odd “I’ll have a cup-of-cino”, most customers seem evolvingly coffee-savvy, ordering long macchiatos and the occasional piccolo latte without a pause.

Design and advertising business, The Globe, which sits approximately 10 metres behind Magazine Espresso, was responsible for the word-laden branding, which has received plenty of positive responses from customers.

With the Burswood area set for transformation in the next few years as part of the Victoria Park Council’s redevelopment plans, the Magazine Espresso team are hoping to have established a name for themselves in the area — mainly for fine espresso and sparkling conversation.
