Direct Trade

5 Senses Coffee prides itself on its ethical business practices. In line with this ethos, 5 Senses has developed a Direct Trade arrangement with many of the farmers who grow the beans that we expertly roast and supply to you.

Some of these farmers are not able to qualify for the Fairtrade program, for various reasons – their lack of formally defined farming plots or labour forces, for one.

Dean has brokered an arrangement directly with individual growers in many disparate areas of the world who cannot qualify for the Fairtrade program – cutting out the middle man, guaranteeing them a fair and generous return.

The Simbu Community

For example, Dean’s Direct Trade arrangement with the Simbu community in PNG (who grow the beans which make our award-winning 24/7 blend) benefits the whole community. 5 Senses Coffee pays a price which is fixed above the daily published factory door price paid by other large commercial mills, and this premium is split – half goes to the grower and half is retained for use on community projects (chosen by the Simbu community).

Village Friendly Cups

The Village Friendly range of ristretto cups are another prime example of a Direct Trade arrangement, allowing 5 Senses to give back to the community of Malawi.

So go on, select one of our Direct Trade coffees and bask in the warm glow you get knowing that the farmer who grew the beans that you’re enjoying is reaping the rewards too!
