5 Senses – Our ethical business philosophy
At 5 Senses, coffee is not simply a beverage, but a work of art. It’s a ritual to be performed first thing in the morning and a romantic experience in the evening, something that appeals to the sense of smell, taste, sound and touch.
To understand who we are now, it is probably best to understand our journey so far. 5 Senses was founded as a very small roasting operation by Dean Gallagher. Dean had just returned from three years living and working as the Principal of an International School in a remote part of Papua New Guinea.
It was here, in this mountainous province, that he discovered a rare and exceptionally beautiful coffee bean. As it turns out, this amazing coffee was characteristically different to other coffee — not only in PNG, but the world over!
Dean spent a lot of time with the small coffee growers he met there. He spent time in the coffee production mills and in cup assessment labs with expert tasters and researchers. Dean’s ambition was to make this coffee accessible to others and so 5 Senses was born.
These days, 5 Senses supplies premium coffee to discerning coffee lovers right around Australia (and beyond). All our coffee is freshly roasted at one of our roasteries, located in Rockingham, Western Australia and Mornington, Victoria.
Let’s make a difference!
Take a look at almost any commentary on business trends today and you’re likely to read about the triple bottom line – the positive social, cultural and environmental impacts of our business decision-making.
5 Senses PNG PSC-A beans come from hundreds of small village growers in the highlands of New Guinea. Villagers have plots not much bigger than the backyard of a quarter-acre block. The best thing though is that the premium, organically grown beans we buy from these villagers, aside from being among the best tasting in the world, help educate their children and put food on their table.
So, while these villagers may never know about the triple bottom line, enjoying this coffee will make sure that they are one of the biggest winners of your next cappuccino. In a small way, it’s helping to balance the ledger a little.
Trading ethically also means ensuring all our business dealings are carried out with courtesy, honesty and equity, providing a satisfying and enjoyable environment that balances the human and financial needs of all our partners, including our employees.
